From an Ordinary Teacher with an Extraordinary God

Kids on Project Mosaic

When the vision for the Project Mosaic was cast, I was overwhelmed with God’s lavish love. In so many ways, God has connected the dots. I’m so amazed at how He has orchestrated things to respond to the silent prayers of both the kids and the teachers for a bigger place on Sundays.

God has been so good for giving us the Kids@Work to cater to the needs of the Glorietta 4 attendees. But, for several years now, the number of kids going to Mosaic Lounge’s Band Room has been increasing. And now the place is always packed and overcrowded. Some kids would even refuse to go in anymore when they see other kids jostling inside and clamoring for the teacher’s attention. This always makes the teachers sad.

Before the vision of Project Mosaic was cast, some of the pre-school kids, together with their teachers, would innocently lay their hands on the vacated area across the Mosaic Lounge’s Band Room, and whisper their simple but fervent wish. They prayed for a bigger place for all the kids. They knew that only God can make it possible.

So, when Project Mosaic was announced, the teachers were so amazed that it brought them to tears. The very next Sunday the teachers brought the kids to the future location of the new Mosaic Center. The kids grouped and formed into circles with the teacher leading the prayer and thanking God for the new place. The place certainly did not look like a very nice place. It was dark, dingy and musty. One of the kids even said: “It’s ugly!” But the teacher was quick to tell them to make it into a prayer item. Before the teacher can go beyond the words “Lord, thank you for this place…” one of the boys, with his eyes closed but face turned up as if towards the heavens, said “Lord, please make this place beautiful!” in a loud and confident voice. I felt a lump in my throat and tears just welled up in my eyes. The kids would usually just parrot what the teachers would say and this is the first time anyone of them has said a prayer of their own among the group without the teacher’s coaching.

Sunday School teachers with kids
While work is on-going for Project Mosaic, a lot is also happening in the hearts of the kids. Every Sunday we hear stories upon stories of how kids would offer their coin savings for the building of the new center. The teachers encouraged the kids to pray about it. And they came up with the idea of providing them with plastic teddy bear- and piggy – shaped coin banks in various bright colors so the kids will have the joy of taking part in the sacrifice.

Lately my God-moments mostly involve very “serious” talks with the amazing and beautiful kids in Sunday School Let me share some of them…

“Teacher, this is my teddy bear bank.” one 7-year old boy would proudly say.

“Wow! Did you pray to God about this?” I said.

“Yes.” he said, confident but shy.

“What did you pray for?”

“I prayed that it would be full…” I looked at the bear and the coins only reached up to its neck.

“But… I did not fill it up ’cause I’m afraid he might choke…”

On another Sunday, an 8-year old girl rushed to me and hugged me, saying:

“Teacher!!! Here’s my piggy bank for Project Mosaic!!!” in a very excited voice.

“I saved it from my daily allowance. Every 5 pesos I save from the 11 pesos that Mommy gives me.”

She points to her 5-year old sister and says ” She also saves her money to put in her piggy bank.”

“Great! This is really heavy! Did you talk to God about this?”

“Yes…I asked God to make this place big and nice…” she looked at me with bright and hope-filled eyes.

“What do you think? Is this new place big and nice?” looking around as we both stood inside the new center.

“Yes, it is!” she said, beaming.

“What did you say to God?”

“I said thank you because He really answered my prayers.”

And I hugged her back…

This is a girl who would always tell me she’s saving her money to give to the street kids because she feels sorry for them. But she becomes sad when her mom had to borrow her savings to buy books and other things for school. She doesn’t know it yet but God has already answered her heart’s desire to experience the joy of giving.

The Lord is so good for giving us these, kids and their eager response to this opportunity to honor God with their precious coins and heart’s treasures. It was a sweet reminder for us to keep our hearts simple and obedient before Him. To be like little children…

God gave us the Project Mosaic not only to give the kids a bigger place, but, so that He will have a bigger place in the hearts of the kids. And, as it turned out, it’s not only for them but for all the kids in us.
